'Warmamas' gives voice to mothers who wait for their children to come home from the battle front - Tuesday, May 1, 2018

We live in a society that often tries to hide the realities of war – the violence, the destruction and the toll it takes on those who survive. In the upcoming Warmamas: A Performance, Miami’s acclaimed physically integrated company, Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD), tackles the stories of American mothers whose children have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in the recent conflicts there. The piece, a full-length multimedia movement and video collaboration with artist Maria Lino based on the oral history project of the same name, opened for its world premiere performance Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, at Wynwood’s The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

“I felt the story of these ordinary women facing extraordinary challenges was so timely given that we are living in a period of aggression and militarization that never seems to end,” says Karen Peterson, leader of her namesake company for over twenty-five years. “Creating this performance piece with my group, which brings dancers with and without disabilities on to the same stage, and with Maria’s beautiful video projections, was a way for us as artists and citizens to understand, and hopefully illuminate for our audience, these painful and complex issues,” Peterson added. The Warmamas oral history project itself was founded six years ago by Patricia Figueroa Sowers as a platform for all mothers to tell their stories and have them documented as an essential part of our country's history. The original interviews are archived at the University of Miami’s Otto Richter Library in the Story Corps/Warmamas Community Archive.
